Both 7th and 8th grade classes delve into sketching, focusing on orthographic and isometric sketching.  We start with hand-drawn sketches on paper, work with metric dimensioning, and then transfer the ideas from the initial paper sketches over full scale to Google Sketchup.

Seventh graders use the skills to complete a small 3D printing project, exporting .skp files to .stl files that are printed on our Makerbot 3D printer.  Students who excel in these activities are encouraged to design, draft, and print parts for the next project – the junior solar sprint.

Eighth graders have the opportunity to design, draft, and print gearboxes, gears, and even hubs and blades for their KidWind model wind turbines.
